The interesting thing about being an entrepreneur is that we are highly intrigued by other entrepreneur’s stories. I love reading about how and why someone created a business, what type of marketing they are doing and what their plans are for growth. So when a former contractor of mine started her own coconut butter business I knew I wanted to share her story!
Lindsay Binnie is the founder of Binnie’s Coconut Butter, a delicious, organic coconut butter that can be spread on fruit, toast, and graham crackers, stirred into oatmeal and smoothies, and so much more! The coconut butter is available in three flavors – Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt, Simply Cinnamon and Very Vanilla – and is gluten-free, vegan, Paleo friendly and is made with Non-GMO ingredients.
For years, Lindsay tried her hand at a number of businesses. Although many of them were not great business ideas she used what she learned from each of those experiences and has applied that knowledge to Binnie’s Coconut Butter.
“It really wasn’t a matter of deciding to start my own business,” Lindsay says, “As much as I think it was just part of being an entrepreneur. You have ideas that turn into businesses and you try your hand until something sticks. I’m very grateful that something finally did stick and I am able to do something I am very passionate about.”
In the summer of 2014, Lindsay was looking for healthy snack ideas for her children. She decided to make coconut butter but knew she’d have to flavor it in order for her kids to eat it. Her kids absolutely loved it and soon began begging for what they lovingly called “Binnie Butter”!
That’s when Lindsay realized maybe she was on to something. She decided to create three flavors, jar them up and take her tasty coconut butter to her local farmer’s market. She wasn’t sure how receptive people would be to flavored coconut butter but she knew it was worth a shot. To her amazement, she sold out of coconut butter every week and at times people were literally fighting over the last jar!
She launched a website in 2015 to take online orders and started spreading the word about her business on Facebook and Instagram. This summer, she, along with another person, went to six farmer’s markets per week. They are now in discussions with several retail stores and grocers in the Colorado Springs, Denver and Boulder areas to place the product in stores.
Her success has happened so quickly that she’s had to overcome some real challenges. Not only has she had to research the ever-changing natural food industry and learn about creating brand awareness, she had to learn some lessons in Business 101 and building a company.
“I’m learning how to overcome challenges, like how to make it as a small company in a big industry by just taking it one day at a time and most importantly, by surrounding myself with people who are much smarter than me,” Lindsay says. “I’m so thankful and very blessed to have met people who are helping me out of the goodness of their hearts.”
Lindsay hopes to one day pay it forward and help someone else who’s in need of direction. To other entrepreneurs like her out there she says, “Keep being ambitious. It’s not as far out of reach as you think. And keep asking God how He wants to use you. When you find it, you’ll know.”
Her hopes and dreams for Binnie’s Coconut Butter is that God would use it to be a blessing to others. “I don’t know how God is going to use all this for His purpose, but I know He will. I’m a big believer that if you hold your business (and everything in your life for that matter) with an open hand to Him, He is going to bring more meaning and purpose to it than we could ever do on our own. Because He makes us capable. I pray that this would be a huge blessing to not only the people on my team right now, but anyone that comes in contact with our brand. It’s easy to lose sight of that, so it’s something I have to commit to, not every year, but every day. Starting my day off with an open hand to Him and asking Him for direction and to use my life and business for Him.”
